Intimacy Coordination

If your script includes intimate content, review the requirements on this page before casting, rehearsing, or filming.

The Production Office uses the Intimacy Evaluation Chart to determine whether a project requires additional discussion, an Intimacy Coordinator, or other support.

Important: Do not begin planning or filming intimate content until the Production Office has reviewed the scene and confirmed the required support and approvals.

What Counts as Intimate Content?

Intimate content may include, but is not limited to:

  • Kissing

  • Simulated sexual activity

  • Nudity or partial nudity

  • Physical contact that may require choreography, consent planning, or performer support

  • Any scene the Production Office identifies as requiring intimacy review

If you are unsure whether a scene requires review, contact the Production Office before casting, rehearsing, or filming.

How the Review Process Works

Step 1: Review the Intimacy Evaluation Chart

Use the Intimacy Evaluation Chart to understand how the Production Office may evaluate your script and determine the appropriate level of support.

The chart can help you understand whether your project may require:

  • A SAG-AFTRA Certified Intimacy Coordinator

  • A generally certified and experienced Intimacy Coordinator

  • Another form of intimacy-related support

  • Additional Production Office discussion or review

Step 2: Submit Your Project for Review

If your script contains intimate content, the Production Office may initiate follow-up through Smartsheet as part of the project review process.

Respond promptly to any Smartsheet requests and provide clear information about the scene, performers, planned choreography, and requested support.

Step 3: Discuss the Plan with Your Cast and Crew

Talk with your cast and crew about the intimacy plan before rehearsal or production.

Performers have the right to decline actions or request additional support if they are not comfortable. Do not pressure performers into actions they have not agreed to perform.

Step 4: Hire an Approved Intimacy Coordinator if Required

If the Production Office determines that a professional Intimacy Coordinator is required, the student production is responsible for hiring the coordinator.

You must provide the Production Office with the coordinator's proof of certification and/or professional resume for approval before production.

Hiring an Intimacy Coordinator is at the student's expense.

Step 5: Wait for Approval Before Production

Do not rehearse or film intimate content until the Production Office has reviewed the plan, approved the required support, and confirmed that the production may proceed.

A project submission, Project Number, Smartsheet request, equipment reservation, or facility reservation does not automatically approve intimate content.

Student Responsibilities

Students are responsible for:

  • Reviewing the Intimacy Evaluation Chart

  • Identifying intimate content in the script

  • Submitting accurate information through the project review process

  • Discussing intimacy plans with cast and crew

  • Respecting performer boundaries and consent

  • Hiring an approved Intimacy Coordinator when required

  • Providing certification and/or professional credentials to the Production Office

  • Following all Production Office instructions and safety requirements

Before You Begin

Use this checklist before planning a scene that may require intimacy support:

  • Review the script for intimate content.

  • Review the Intimacy Evaluation Chart.

  • Confirm whether the project requires Greenlighting.

  • Submit the project and respond to Smartsheet requests.

  • Discuss the plan with cast and crew.

  • Confirm whether an Intimacy Coordinator is required.

  • Hire an approved Intimacy Coordinator if required.

  • Submit certification and/or professional credentials to the Production Office.

  • Wait for approval before rehearsal or production.
