After Your Project Is Complete

Once your project is complete, there are a few important responsibilities to keep in mind:

Contracts & Documentation

You are responsible for retaining all contracts and legal documents related to your film for at least two years after completion (seven years is recommended). If your film continues to circulate through festivals, screenings, distribution, or online exhibition, you are also responsible for tracking any expiration dates, renewals, or fees associated with those agreements.

Storage & Backups

DePaul and SCA do not store project files, contracts, media, or other production assets after a project is completed. Be sure to organize and maintain backups of all materials for future use.

Intellectual Property

Student filmmakers generally retain the intellectual property rights to creative work produced through SCA coursework, except in cases where rights have been assigned through a separate agreement or contract.

Use of Student Work

DePaul will request your permission before using your project for promotional, educational, or marketing purposes.

Stay Connected

We encourage students and alumni to keep the Production Office updated on thesis films, grant-funded projects, festival selections, awards, and other production accomplishments. We love celebrating and sharing student success stories whenever possible.
